Musica de la Detroit

Over the years, Detroit has played an important role in music history. The city is the home to Motown, is the birthplace of Punk and Techno, has some jazz roots and then there's Detroit Rock City.

Some of the more famous artists coming out of the 313 include: The Temptations, Stevie Wonder (he's actually from Flint-town), Aretha Franklin, The Jackson 5 although from Indiana they recorded on the Motown Label, MC5, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Romantics, The White Stripes, Bob Seger, Madonna was born and raised in Detroit, Aaliyah, Trick Trick, Eminem, DJ Godfather, Alice Cooper, Kid Rock (please keep in mind I classified this list as "more famous"), Diana Ross & the Supremes, and who could forget the Nuge (Ted Nugent! - think he'll be running for governor in a few years?)

One of the great things about this city is its music and its venues. There are some great local bands here and there's always something going on in the music scene no matter what day or night it is.

Anyways, this weekend was the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. Saturday afternoon, I headed up to the festival with one of my friends, Amanda. There were stages set up in Hart Plaza with music going all day. A few of the artists we checked out included Kenny Larkin and Hard Floor. ,

In addition to the music, one of the things that I love about the festival is the people watching. Music events seem to attract all kinds and an electronic music festival certainly is no exception. It's great though - people from all walks of life sharing one common interest.

After the music festival, Amanda and I headed to a couple more venues where we saw DJ Godfather, a Ghettotech DJ, and Richie Hawtin, who is well known for minimalist techno. I'll be honest, I don't know much about electronic music. I can establish the difference between major categories of electronic music, I know I don't like trance and that's about it.

Anyways, the festival was a lot of fun. Here are a few pics from the event.

Looking at Hart Plaza, walking into the festival.

I don't think this guy could have gotten one more patch on those pants if he tried.

Hard Floor on stage Sunday Night

Lookin' out into the crowd as Hard Floor was on

Ok, this picture didn't turn out, but the best part about this guy was the My Little Pony fabric that he was using as a butt flap on the backseat of his pants. All I can say is, I didn't take nearly as many pictures of people as I would have liked to, I was too busy enjoying the music which, was really why I was there in the first place. I have a few more pics of some people, but they're not blog worthy.

Overall, it was a great weekend. If you're in Detroit, be sure to check out some more cool events coming in Hart Plaza, the Jazz Fest, Comerica Cityfest, the International Freedom Fest, and the list goes on......

Dude - you forgot John Lee Hooker. Not from Detroit originally but spent most of his career there and is now one of the greatest bluesmen of all time.

Dude - there are just too many great artists from Detroit. It's hard to keep track of them all!

Yeah, I'd definitely have skipped over George Clinton, Grand Funk Railroad, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight, Wilson Pickett for Trick Trick and DJ Godfather.

By the way, after the White Stripes came on the scene as the next greatest thing, have they had any follow up success? (I'm not talking trash with this one, I'm actually curious if they were a one hit album band, or if I'm just out of it.)

Hahaha - I was trying to cover the bases, you know, give props to many different types of musical styles.

I'm not sure where the White Stripes are headed - they do have an album coming out this summer though. But if you want to talk about Detroit one hit wonders, there's always Uncle Kracker (thank you Kid Rock for bringing this guy on the scene.....)
